Creating a new book
We offer two different ways to start writing your new book. You can either start from scratch, or upload a finished (or in progress) book from a Word doc (.doc or .docx format).
We've put together a handy step-by-step guide to creating a new book that covers both options.
Editing your title
Every book needs a title! If you uploaded a document, the title will be automatically populated from the document name. If you created your book from scratch, you'll need to name your book during the creation progress.
Note: you may notice when starting a new book that it appears as though a title has been chosen for you. The 'My Story' text is just a placeholder, you will still need to give your story a title to finish the book creation process.
You can edit your title at any point from the Writing Room. Simply click theicon next to your title.
Unless you're writing a short story, your book is going to need chapters. You can have as little or as many chapters as your heart desires. These can be named, reordered and deleted at any stage of the writing and editing process.
Your chapters will be named 'Untitled' by default. For the best reading experience make sure every chapter has a name. If you leave unnamed chapters you will have problems with your Table of Contents, and readers will be unable to jump between chapters with ease.
The text editor offers many functions for editing your book including changing font style, size, italics, bold, inserting images or tables, aligning text etc. All the editing tools can be found on the toolbar above your content.
It's important to remember that the format of your book's font size, style and alignment will generally be determined by your reader via their Kindle device, iPad or otherwise. Therefore, most of the formatting options are not all that important after your book is published.
Editing your metadata
To edit your metadata click the icon found at the top right of your page.
Your book's metadata contains information about your book such as Title, Subtitle, Author, Synopsis, Tags, Genre and Word Goal. You can also upload a Cover Image for your book from this screen.
It's important to complete all the relevant sections of your book's metadata so we can make sure the right readers are discovering your book.
Hint: Updating your Word Goal not only keeps you motivated, it will also help readers visualise how far through you are in the writing process :)
Previewing and downloading your book
You've added a title, formatted your book, written chapters, inserted images and updated your metadata. Now you want to see what your book will look like to your readers.
Click the icon, found top right of your screen, to preview your new book.
From the Preview screen you can also download your book in ePub format by clicking the icon.
Tablo is so clever that your progress will be automatically saved after every letter you type, so you don't need to worry about it :).
You'll know this is working by checking the Saving or Saved icon that's found bottom left of your screen.
Once you've decided a chapter is ready to be viewed by the world wide web, simply click the Publish on Tablo button.
This will automatically put your book into the Fresh feed and make it available for search on Tablo and the Tablo Reader app. Any followers you have will also be updated in a weekly digest email of your latest progress.
You will also be prompted to share your book via Twitter or Facebook.
This is a great way to start to build a readership and help you begin to publicise your work.
Sell on Bookstores
This is the final step in the creation of your book. Every word has been written, every chapter has been painstakingly edited. Your cover image looks snazzy and your format is fabulous. Now it's time to send your book out to the Apple bookstore.
Click the Sell on Bookstores button (see below).
On the next page, fill out all the required details and hit Publish my book!
We've also put together a step-by-step guide to Selling your book on bookstores.
